General Training Task 1 Informal Letter - 1st
Question
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
A friend who lives in another country is considering moving to your city for a new job. They have written to you asking for your opinion on the matter.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:
- tell your friend what you think are the good things about your city
- explain some of the difficulties they might face
- suggest how you could help them if they decide to move
Write at least 150 words.
Dear Alex,
It was wonderful to receive your letter and hear the exciting news about your job offer! I was so thrilled for you – it sounds like a fantastic career prospect, and the idea of you moving to my city is brilliant.
You asked for my honest opinion, and I think it would be a great move for you. The city has a really vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere which I know you would love. The cultural scene is world-class, with endless galleries, theatres, and live music venues. Furthermore, it's a major hub for your industry, offering unparalleled opportunities for professional development and networking.
However, I should be upfront about a couple of the challenges. The most significant one is the cost of living, especially accommodation. Finding an affordable apartment in a desirable neighbourhood can be a daunting task, as the rental market is notoriously competitive. Public transport is also extensive but can get extremely crowded during peak hours, which takes some getting used to.
If you do decide to come, I'd be more than happy to help you settle in. You could stay with me for the first few weeks to get your bearings and save on costs while you apartment hunt. I can also introduce you to my circle of friends and show you all the best local spots to make you feel at home right away.
Let me know what you decide. Either way, I'm here to support you.
Best wishes,
Sam
